This book is Floetry, in the tradition of Black Poetry (as expressed in the spoken word community.) Yea, you can read it, but it meant to be recited aloud. My floetry is an intersection between my Blackness and my manliness. My faith, and the struggle. My love and my heartache. It’s an artistic expression without trying to fit into any orthodox box. It’s Heterodox in fact. It’s outside of the box. This Black river of poetry, or floetry is paradoxical. It’s both an art and a science. There’s a paradoxical nature to writing poetry just as there is to living. We want both playfulness and thoughtfulness. We want intuition and reason. We want to color in lines because we are supposed to, right? But I decided, this time it would be okay if I didn’t all of the time, stay in the lines and follow the written rules of poetry. This book is an exploration, experimentation and a letting go into a stream of Black consciousness and intuitive expressions. And being a spoken word artist, self expression, flow, cadence, shock, awe, touching your audience (rather they agree with you or not) is the point. Coloring outside of the lines is not always comfortable. Read more
